Steve assumed the reigns as President of SFATEK, and is looking forward to
showing OrderMaster customers a renewed commitment to customer service, product
quality, and product support. Having dealt with Steve myself for some time
now, I can testify to his high level of commitment to his customers. Steve
doesn't have to strive for a high level of professionalism in his business,
he just lives it.

06/07/2001 - National
Marketing Services (NMS) is a professional merchandising company
that offers in-store merchandising services to retailers like Toys
R Us, OfficeMax, and Staples. For instance, NMS field representatives
set up displays and manage the inventory of Disney videos in Toys R Us
stores. Until recently, NMS field representatives were gathering
merchandising and inventory data and recording it using pencil
and paper. The representatives were then faxing the information
or using the companys interactive voice response (IVR) system
to send the information to NMS home office. There, the data
was manually entered into the companys database. Some of
NMS customers were requesting a faster turn-around-time of
their information. Consequently, NMS started looking for an electronic
solution to accommodate its customers request and alleviate
its paperwork headache.
Capitalize On Others Mistakes
SFA
Technologies, a software developer and systems integrator, heard
about NMS need for an automated system through a business
associate. At the time, NMS was using another integrators
solution that was ineffective due to its inability to accurately
gather and transfer data. SFA approached NMS and demonstrated that
its solutionMarketMaster was a viable one. SFA outfitted
NMS field representatives with Symbols SPT 1700 handheld
computers that run SFAs tailored handheld data capture software. Our
software applications can run on multiple platforms but we chose
Symbols product because of its integrated scanning capability, said
Alex Xie, founder of SFA. Once NMS field representatives
gather their information, they attach a snap on modem to the SPT
1700 device. The data is then transferred to a common database
center on the main server via the Internet. (The database center
can be located on SFAs server or on the customers server.)
Customize Retail Application
To
date, the pilot program of 25 Disney field Reps has been successfully
finished. Those reps are using the handheld devices to scan and
gather video merchandising and inventory information at Toys R Us
stores and send it to home office. SFA
is currently finishing up market tests and beginning field implementation
with representatives for NMS office furniture store and home
improvement superstore clients.
The
full roll out program for 500 NMS field representatives should
be done by Q3, 2001. It
takes anywhere from tow to eight weeks to complete the market tests.
We give the field representatives an opportunity to tell us if
anything needs to be changed or added to the application, said
Xie. Once we make the necessary changes, the devices are
rolled out a region at a time. The entire installation takes about
four months.
Speed Saves Time
According to Xie,
NMS is able to save a significant amount of time using the handheld
solution. Field representatives can get their data back to
the database center a lot faster than they did when they were faxing
and phoning the information in, said Xie. It gives
them more time to spend on meeting clients individual needs. In
addition, NMS saves time and cuts labor costs by eliminating the
need to hand key information into the database, which also results
in fewer errors.
